Bernard is almost dismissed in the world state. The director however is discovered to be the father of John. The director or "tomakin" is brought to light as johns father and is soon laughed out by his coworkers. Bernard succeeds the director but becomes very self centered.
After issues with the reservation Lenina takes enough soma to go unconscious for 18 hours. Bernard calls mustapha mind to tell him about John and Linda. Mond signs releases to get Linda and John. John however thinks that Bernard and Lenina left so he goes to visit Lenina where he quotes Shakespeare to her while she sleeps. Now this as creepy as it is is I assume important to the overview of the story. Chapter 8 goes into how John learns what he had learned on the reservation. Since no one accepted him in the reservation he was always entrances by the other world. John learns to read from Linda and her lover pope who give him both the works of Shakespeare and the beta book for workers. Linda however drinks mescal an alcoholic drink till she's in a stupor constantly. This chapter eludes to John and Linda going back to the world state but also the troubles and individual thoughts John feels or encounters. Lenina on the reservation with Bernard sits through a savage ceremony that involves a cross and snakes. She is horrified by how the savages act and function. She also meets Linda who tells the story of how John, the man who wanted to sacrifice himself during the ceremony, came to be since she too came from the world state. Although Linda had to have John since abortions were not accepted on the reservation. John is also the child of the director but it is not widely known. It's an interesting chapter but very scifi oriented. The director of the world state begins to explain to a group of students in London how life occurs in the caste system of the region. The world director goes on to explain the groups of the after ford years including the the alphas, betas, deltas and epsilons. The first chapter can be seen as an overzealous critique on scientific discoveries of the time and tries to add opinion on that concept. In chapter 3 the children are commissioned for jobs. The director shows a group of students the ways in which the hatcheries function including the training of the children. This includes the electric shock when lower caste children try to pick up certain objects. This chapter seems to provide grueling info about the society the people are living in info that proves the city or area of living to be more primitive than advanced. The director shows and introduces the childten of the world state to sexual games. One child cries and doesn't like the games so he is sent off to the psychological center. This chapter also shows the issues between Henry and Bernard because of tensions caused by Lenina going on a date with Henry. It's kind of interesting because this conforming community is secular in several ways and is more different than similar when comparing it to a normal society. In chapter 4 Bernard finds embarrassment in the fact that he has to ask Lenina to the savage reservation. Lenina doesn't understand why Bernard acts the way he does. Lenina goes on a date in a helicopter with Henry while Bernard seeks support in his friend and professor helmholt. Helmholtz feels the same usually as Bernard on a social as well as emotional level. Chapter 5 we can only describe as deeply disturbing. As Henry and lenina fly over a crematorium, where bodies are made into fertilizer they respond and play off each other's feelings. The reader then has to take into account the fact that lenina and Henry both have coffee and a drug called soma. Although lenina is in a drugged stupor she remembers to take contraception. This event reminds the reader of the immoral intriqusies of the world around them. Bernard also participates in soma but in an almost religious circle or communion. The reader can only be taken off guard when a full out orgy comes into play at the end of the chapter. This event was designed by the author to make the reader even more unstable through out the story. In chapter 6 we see a definitive point in which Bernard finds himself at a wrestling match with lenina. He starts to see himself more as an individual but contradictingly has relations with lenina making him out to be more of a conformist. Lenina sees no wrong in conforming to the social ideals of the group but sees that Bernard struggles with this concept. |
